2010 Etape, 30% abandon
This gent here had absolutely been blasted to smithereens in the 2010 Etape up the Marie Blanque, Soulor and Tourmalet. This photo was taken a mere 8km from the top of the Tourmalet – the finish. Things aren't looking good, are they.
And he wasn't the only one. Fully 30% of the field – that's roughly 3000 people out of 10000 – abandoned.
Obviously the attrition was due to a variety of circumstances but I'll bet the majority of cases could be pinned down to poor eating (in the week preceding and during the event) as well as inadequate training.
Fuelling for Etape, the right way
It's no secret that many of us just fuel for Etape according to our standard eating.
Unfortunately, that is not going to cut the mustard.
