Overseas Mobile Data for Australian travellers
Data Roaming – avoid if possible
You should avoid data roaming at all costs. The best way to get Overseas Mobile Data for Australian travellers, is to get a local SIM.
Even with an add-on roaming data block, data roaming is heinously expensive. Definitely get local prepaid SIM with data instead – read more on the Overseas Prepaid Mobile Internet formation page.
Data Roaming from Australian Telcos
As readers of my travel adventures know, and as most Australians know, the Australian mobile market, as with most things telecommunications (and the “market” in general), is highly uncompetitive, particularly in the data space.
No one in the market provides either a prepaid or postpaid data cap for Overseas Mobile Data for Australian travellers. Telstra used to offer one through their Browse Plus prepaid product, but this does not (perhaps wisely) include overseas roaming anymore.
Vodafone has from what I can tell the best overseas data roaming for $5 a day you get all your at-home data. You need to be a Vodafone customer, which is a bummer, as their network is held together much like Hanoi's phone system is. You know what I mean: birds nest wires on poles. You could of course sign up as a Vodafone customer before going, but they'll want a bond.
I hunted around specialist providers like Vroam, who aren't in this space yet, or else they are VERY expensive.
