Etape du Tour 2011 Road Closure Information
I've been planning this post for a while and have only just got the official information I need on 2011 Etape du Tour road closures from the organisers.
The Guide to 2011 Etape du Tour covers all the below information, including alternate routes for Etape Alpes, in much greater detail, so if you want to read more about 2011 Etape du Tours, check the guide out.
The ASO has indicated road closures will occur 1 hour before the elite riders roll through. The roads will stay closed until after the last riders roll through (10-12 hours).
The French constabulary can be a little over-zealous with regard to the application of road closures, so my advise is to make sure that if you have someone taking a car to the end of Etape for you, leave more breathing space than the 1 hour indicated by the ASO.
For those doing Etape Alpes, I recommend leaving 2 hours to clear Valloire and the Galibier, once you're over those, you'll be fine. Alternatively, you can drive via the Glandon which in my opinion is an easier drive anyway. Steer clear of the Croix de Fer. The road up from St Sorlin d'Arves is an utter goat track. If you have a campervan, it will not be a pleasant experience.
