Cycology Jersey Review: the greatest jerseys in the world?
Note: We usually include a large number of images in the post, but now we're using video so watch the video to get all the visuals. The video contains a deep-dive into each aspect of the video too. So watch it!
Fit and Cut
Check the video for a full breakdown of the cut, but based on my size of 5'7″ and weight of 64kg (4-5kg over race weight):
- The length on my size Small is perfect. Not too long, not too short.
- There's no excess material that indicates poor cut (and that flaps around) although if I didn't have such non-cyclist lats, there might be.
- The arm length is slightly longer than I am used to, but is comfy.
Overall, this is a well-cut jersey. None of this cheap rubbish you see people riding around in.
Material
The material chosen for almost all of the jersey is of really high quality usually seen on premium jerseys.
The side and back material is a super breathable 4-way stretch Italian thermal fabric. This suits me fine because since escaping Melbourne's hellish winter temperatures, all my riding is in humid sub-tropical Australia.
The front and pocket material is a beautifully soft material. At first touch I thought that there was no way this material would breathe properly, especially in our humid conditions. But I was wrong. On a long, humid ride (4 hours, 30 degrees), the front material was incredibly moisture-wicking and breathable.
The arm cuffs and waist cuff are a beautifully soft, raw-cut (i.e. non-stitched) band. The waist at the back has the standard bunched elastic and gripper.
About the only criticisms I have of the material choices are:
- Although the fabric on the back is rated UPF50+, it's a 4-way (Italian thermal fabric) stretch fabric. The 4-way stretch fabric lets UV rays through as you move around. During a 4 ride I had on a hot summer's day, I got burnt. On a 3 hour ride starting at 7AM (in full sunlight), I didn't get burnt. Make sure you watch the video for more explanation of this. See an image below, note that this is a relative minor case of sunburn as far as sunburn goes.
- The stretch material used on the front and pockets is used in the rear pockets which means if you load them up for a long ride, you get saggy pockets.
Cycology tell me their new jerseys will rectify these two issues, so keep your eye out for a Cycology jersey review version 2.
I also had a chat to Cycology about the sunburn and they indicated that out of the many, many thousands of jerseys sold, the sunburn issue has never come up.
Also, with a large percentage of their product sold into the EU/UK, the sun strength typically isn't as strong as we get here in Australia.
They also indicated that with all aero fabric, once it starts stretching, there's no practical way to prevent UV penetration, so you need sunscreen!
Zips
The zip on the jersey I reviewed served its purpose, but has two shortcomings:
- It's not a YKK zip; and
- The gauge is a little small, which makes it fiddly to do up. I prefer larger gauge zips so I can do them up quickly whilst riding. Fiddly zips means taking your hands off your handlebars and looking down at the zip, which is obviously unsafe.
Note, newer jerseys use YKK zips.
Attention to Detail
It's the little things that make products great to use.
And I'm pleased to say Cycology have paid attention to detail, which means they care about their products.
Here's a list of things most companies skip over but which Cycology jerseys have.
- Blinded zip: aesthetically pleasing and more importantly, no zip chafe on your neck.
- Flat stitched seams: reduction in chafing.
- A zipped jersey pocket: one of my favourite things about this jersey and a must have. Put your money clip, keys and other valuables in this, zip it up and you'll avoid disasters like lost keys, money and cameras on rides like Etape du Tour.
Cycology Jersey Review: Summary
Our Cycology jersey review reveals a high quality cycling jersey that you will appreciate the comfort, fit, feel and practicality of when riding.
Did I mention the zipped jersey pocket?!
The Cycology jersey materials have great breathability and moisture wicking. This is perfect for those who ride a lot in hot and humid conditions. People who ride a lot in cold climates may need to consider layering more, but I can't confirm (as it's above my pay grade to ride in the cold).
The Cycology jersey reviews show that this is a really well made jersey that has an incredibly cool design (I'm a Mondrian fan) as do all their jerseys. In fact, I reckon their jerseys are collector's items. They're super interesting and visible and stand out amongst a market of either corporatised pro team jerseys or boring-as-batshit 1970s retro stuff that I hold Rapha responsible for starting. (Hey if that's your deal, cool.)
And as for a Cycology knicks review? Stay tuned, that's on its way.
