Velosure releases Travel and Gran Fondo Insurance
Velosure has just announced a new Travel and Gran Fondo Insurance product in conjunction with Cycling Australia. What’s good about this insurance is that you can add cover for events like Etape du Tour, La Marmotte and other sportives.
Now, I’ve always just assumed I’d be covered by my platinum credit card insurance as these events are amateur events. Wrong. A lot of insurers won’t cover this type of activity.
Yes, you can get Etape insurance through the ASO, but as reader Alex M (thanks Alex!) said in an email:
“The Etape does offer insurance for the event, but it is limited to 2500E of medical cover, which I'm not sure is enough. It also provides Death and Permanent Disability insurance, but we already have that as part of our super fund. Also, the insurance is provided by a French company – it can be hard to argue with an English speaking insurance company – I don't know how hard it might be to actually claim the insurance from a French company if something happens!”
This is a big topic, and I’ll cover it in a longer article about Travel and Gran Fondo Insurance, and insurance for cyclists more generally.
Anyway, admittedly the event cover is for the entire length of the trip. This isn’t ideal as most of us only need 1 day of cover. But, it is handy, and it will be very useful for Haute Route (though Haute Route offers insurance optionally) and as a worst-case backstop, is fine. The Gran Fondo insurance component only adds a small percentage to the premium anyway.
Remember, you’ll still need cover for your bike, which you can get from your house and contents insurer or from a specialised insurance provider. I’ll have a bigger article on bike insurance soon but for what it’s worth, I actually get bike insurance from Velosure (Elite cover).

Anyway for the Aussies, VeloSure’s new Gran Fondo Insurance and Travel Insurance is definitely worth a look.
For those of you outside Australia, I’d love to hear who you use for your Travel and Gran Fondo Insurance, and any other insights into insuring your bike. And if you have a question you'd like answered, add it to the comments below.
